Managing existing post types

VX → Post Types has two tabs. Managed lists the post types VX has settings for. Detected lists everything else WordPress knows about: Posts, Pages, and post types other plugins registered.

You don't need to manage a post type to add fields

A fieldset can target any post type, managed or not. You can add fields to WooCommerce products without changing anything about how WooCommerce registers them.

Manage a post type only when you want VX to control its settings: labels, URLs, editor features, menu placement, icon. Click Manage on its row in Detected. Fieldsets that already target it keep working.

Stop managing or delete

What you can do depends on who created the post type:

Created by VXCreated by WordPress or another plugin
Stop managing—Removes VX's settings. The post type goes back to how its owner registered it, and returns to Detected.
DeleteUnregisters the post type and removes its VX settings. Not available.

In both cases, entries stay in the database. After you delete a VX post type, its posts are still there, hidden, because WordPress no longer knows the type. Create a post type with the same key and they reappear. Removing the posts themselves is a separate cleanup (for example with a database cleanup plugin).

Fieldsets that target the post type keep their Locations either way.

System post types

WordPress registers many post types that hold internal data rather than content, such as revisions, templates, navigation menus and global styles. VX treats these as system post types and hides them from Detected and from fieldset location pickers, since adding fields to them does nothing useful. Turn on Show system types on the Detected tab to see them.

A post type counts as system when WordPress gives it no admin screen, when it is one of a short list of core infrastructure types (patterns, templates, template parts, navigation menus), or when its key starts with an underscore. A post type you manage with VX is never treated as system.

Technical details for LLMs
  • Stop managing and delete are the same ability, vx-framework/delete-post-type (key or keys). It removes the VX config only and never deletes posts; the response names the restore that brings the config back.
  • Meta Watch doesn't track posts left behind by a deleted post type.
  • System detection: no admin UI (show_ui false), a key starting with _, or the core list wp_block, wp_template, wp_template_part, wp_navigation, wp_global_styles, wp_font_family, wp_font_face. Adjust the list with the vxframework/system_post_types filter. Managed types are never system.
