Creating and managing taxonomies

Create a taxonomy when several entries should share the same list of terms, and when that list is worth managing on its own (with term pages, counts and descriptions). If each entry just needs one of a few fixed values, a Select field is simpler.

Creating one

Click Create on Taxonomies and enter a singular and plural name. The Key is permanent:

  • Up to 32 characters: lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores.
  • It can't match any existing taxonomy or post type key, and WordPress's reserved words are refused.

Under General → Post types, pick the post types that use this taxonomy. The list shows only post types VX manages. To attach a taxonomy to one that isn't in the list, such as Posts, manage that post type first.

Managing existing taxonomies

Like post types, taxonomies appear on two tabs: Managed and Detected. Click Manage to take over the settings of Categories, Tags or another plugin's taxonomy.

On a taxonomy you didn't create, Pre-assigned to shows the post types it already belongs to, read-only. Post types lets you add more.

Stop managing removes VX's settings and returns the taxonomy to its owner. Delete is only available for taxonomies VX created. Either way, terms stay in the database. Recreate a taxonomy with the same key and they reappear.

WordPress's internal taxonomies (such as navigation menus, post formats, link categories and pattern categories) are system taxonomies. VX hides them unless you turn on Show system types.

Technical details for LLMs
  • Key validation: ^[a-z0-9_-]+$, max 32, not a reserved WordPress query var, not an existing taxonomy or post type key.
  • Abilities: vx-framework/create-taxonomy, vx-framework/update-taxonomy, vx-framework/delete-taxonomy (stop managing and delete; never removes terms), vx-framework/list-taxonomies, vx-framework/get-taxonomy.
  • The Post types picker lists managed post types only, and omits types that already have the taxonomy through their registrant.
  • System taxonomies are filterable with vxframework/system_taxonomies. Managed taxonomies are never system.
