Maps and geocoding

Pro

VX → Settings → Maps & Geocoding configures the maps behind Location and Area fields.

This screen belongs to the Pro plugin. The Free plugin has no Maps & Geocoding screen and no address search — see Free vs Pro.

Geocoding (address search)

Address search turns what an editor types into suggestions and coordinates. VX supports two providers:

• Google Maps, with a Server API key
• Mapbox, with a Server access token

The search runs through your own site's server, so the key is never sent to editors' browsers. Use a server key without HTTP referrer restrictions; a browser (client-side) key won't work.

You can tune the results:

• Search scope: full addresses, or only cities, regions or countries.
• Allowed result types and Restrict to countries, to keep suggestions relevant.
• Language and Region bias, for how results are written and ranked.

Every address search is a request to the provider and counts towards your plan's quota; VX doesn't cache results. Most providers let you set a usage cap on the key.

Without a key, address search doesn't work, but editors can still place a Location by clicking the map.

Rendering (the map)

Maps use OpenStreetMap tiles by default, which need no key. To use another tile service, set a Tile URL template and Subdomains, and follow that service's attribution rules.

Other

• Default location and Default zoom: where the map opens when a field is empty.
• Max zoom: how far editors can zoom in.

Technical details for LLMs

• Option: vxframework_geo → map.openstreetmap.{ tile_url, tile_subdomains, attribution, max_zoom (1–22, default 19) }, map.default_location.{ lat, lng, zoom }, geocoding.provider (google_maps | mapbox), geocoding.autocomplete.{ mode: full_address | city | region | country, types[], countries[] }, geocoding.google_maps.{ server_key, language, region, countries[] }, geocoding.mapbox.{ access_token, language, countries[] }.
• Proxy: vx-framework/v1/geo/{settings,autocomplete,details,geocode,reverse}; no caching or rate limiting. Add providers with vxframework/geo/geocoding_providers.
• Keys are never exported or included in config bundles. vx-framework/get-geo-settings reports keys only as set / not set.
• Capability module:geo. The routes, the providers and this settings store are Pro only; a Free build has none of them and makes no geocoding request.
